George Mason

George Mason came to Salisbury in 1966 to attend college. He graduated from Salisbury University in 1971 and continued to live in the area. He and his wife Valerie, who he met at SU, have three grown children: Danielle and her husband Matt, Nick and his wife Tasha, and Elisabeth with her husband Gabe. There is also a grandchild, Cameron Rain Mason, born October 24, 2005. George taught school for 31 years at Snow Hill Elementary School in Snow Hill, MD. He and Valerie operate Mason's Used and New Books, Clocks, Gifts and Tin Sign Gallery located at 101 S. Baltimore Ave. in Ocean City, MD. The store number is 410-289-5511. He has been a member of The Writer's Bloc since October 2003.

Interested in reading and writing from an early age, George's first, never published, story was created in church before he could write. One Sunday, he rushed to finish pencil illustrations in a small tablet. The pastor, preaching past noon as he did every Sunday, allowed him the time needed to complete it. As soon as the service ended and before leaving the church, George exhorted his mother to write out the text to go with the stick illustrations as he dictated it to her. To this day, he can not believe she did. The story was a western and has been lost for many years.

Problems of Democracy class in high school started George writing letters to editors, government representatives, and others. He continues to enjoy this activity to this day. Along with others who signed up to do so, he writes 150 word opinions once a week for the Readers Forum in The Daily Times just for fun and practice.

In the 70's and 80's, he had paid articles published in a number of magazines including Instructor Magazine and the old Baltimore Sun Magazine. He has done successful ad and product brochure writing for his own business.

Today George wants to write a memoir and family history for himself and his family. Some more magazine articles and a book could also be in the works.
